About SDA - Toronto's Original Concept Studio Dedicated to Preserving Street Dance
The Street Dance Academy (SDA), Toronto's first and only dance studio dedicated to sustaining and furthering the multifaceted styles of street dance, opened its doors in September 2006 at its centrally located digs at 160 Spadina Avenue in Toronto. Founded by b-girl Mae Hem of Toronto's shebang! crew, SDA offers an array of classes, workshops and events focused on a multitude of street dance styles, including breakin', poppin' and lockin', house, hip hop, lindy hop and swing, among others.

"Toronto's buzzing street dancing community is diverse, creative, and talented, and yet we felt that there was something missing - a place to converge and hang out, a place where you feel the vibe and passion of those around you, a place where you can dance to your heart's content, work on your skills and learn new styles," says b-girl Mae Hem, Founder and General Manager of the Street Dance Academy. "SDA will fill that void as the place to bring the street dance community together. You no longer have to dance by yourself in your basement."

Street dance comprises of styles that have over the years emerged within alternative and niche cultures with tap and swing being some of the earliest street dance styles. More recently, breakin', poppin' and lockin', house, and reggae have developed as specific techniques associated with different body movements. The new concept studio will tap into a wealth of resources to provide an extended selection of services, including showcases, art events and a video dance library.

"A run of the mill studio is not what the community needs," says Mae Hem. "Our objective is to demystify the street dance culture, educate the public and make street dance more accessible."
